How to get to Big Beef Creek Field Station

Driving from Seattle, starting at the University of Washington

  1. Check the Ferry Schedule at the WSDOT site
  2. The best ferry choices from Seattle to Big Beef Creek are the Seattle-to-Bremerton Ferry or the Seattle-to-Bainbridge Island Ferry. Both of these ferries leave from downtown Seattle. The Fauntleroy-to-Southworth and Edmonds-to-Kingston ferries are also options if you're coming from south or north of the Seattle area. If you don't want to take a ferry, you can drive around via I-5 South and the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.

  3. Check traffic in Seattle and the Puget Sound area
  4. This site gives an overview of the traffic conditions for driving between the UW and the ferry terminals and I-5 south to Tacoma if you choose to drive.

  5. Getting to the Downtown Seattle Ferry Terminal from UW

The Seattle Ferry Terminal is located on Colman Dock, 801 Alaskan Way/Pier 52, Seattle, WA 98104-1487. To get to the ferry terminal from the UW, take 45th Street westbound from campus (.6 miles) and turn left onto I-5 Southbound. Proceed south to Exit 164 (under the convention center) and follow the signs to the ferry terminal. An alternative route, which can be used if there is heavy traffic in the Safeco Field or Kingdome area, is to take the Union Street exit and proceed on Union for .3 miles, turn left onto 2nd Ave and proceed for .3 miles, turn right onto Madison St. for .2 miles and then left onto Alaskan Way. The terminal is on the right, Pier 52.

4a. Taking the Bremerton Ferry

This route takes you to Big Beef Creek via the Bremerton Ferry, which departs from downtown Seattle. The ferry to Bremerton has a 60 minute crossing time. The drive to the station from Bremerton is approximately 15 miles.

Arriving at the Bremerton Ferry terminal, follow traffic to the terminal exit and proceed straight to the 2nd traffic light. At 6th Street turn left. Keep proceeding west on 6th Street for 2.7 miles, it will become Kitsap Way. From Kitsap Way, take the WA SR-3 North highway on-ramp (right by Denny's Restaurant) and proceed north 4.7 miles to the Newberry Hill Road Exit (the Seabeck exit). Turn left onto NW Newberry Hill Road and drive 3.1 miles to the stop sign at the intersection with Seabeck Highway NW (there is a Chevron gas station at the intersection). Turn right onto Seabeck Highway and drive 2.0 miles downhill to Manley Road.

As you come down the hill on Seabeck Highway, you will see the Manley Road turnoff on your left (before you reach the causeway and bridge across the creek). Turn left onto Manley Road and drive about .4 miles until you arrive at the field station parking area; please drive slowly and carefully as the road is gravel and narrow. The UW offices are behind the old caretakers cabin up on the hill.

One-way travel time to the station from the UW is estimated at 2 hours, but this will vary depending on traffic and time-of-day. Time on this route should be budgeted at approximately 30 minutes to drive from UW to ferry terminal, 60 minutes in ferry transit, and 30 minutes from the ferry terminal to the station. The Bremerton Ferry only runs once an hour so care should be taken to leave enough drive time to make the scheduled run, otherwise the wait for the next ferry can be long. Also, on the return trip, arriving in downtown Seattle at rush hours will delay returning to the UW significantly.

4b. Taking Bainbridge Ferry

This route takes you from downtown Seattle to the ferry terminal on Bainbridge Island. The Bainbridge Ferry has a 35 minute crossing time. The drive to the station from Bainbridge is approximately 28 miles and takes between 45-50 minutes depending on traffic in Poulsbo.

Arriving At Bainbridge Ferry terminal, follow traffic to the terminal exit and turn left onto SR-305. Drive 13.5 miles, through Poulsbo, on SR-305 and take the WA SR-3 South ramp and merge onto SR-3 southbound. Proceed 9.1 miles to the Newberry Hill Road Exit (this is the Seabeck exit). Turn right onto NW Newberry Hill Road and drive 3.1 miles to the stop sign at the intersection with Seabeck Highway NW (there is a Chevron gas station at the intersection).

Total travel time to and from the station from the UW will vary depending on traffic and time-of-day. Your one-way transit time for this route should be budgeted at 20-30 minutes to drive from UW to ferry terminal (need to arrive a few minutes before scheduled departure), 35 minutes in ferry transit, and 45-50 minutes from the Bainbridge ferry terminal to the station. Total one-way drive time is approximately 2 hours. Also, on the return trip, arriving in downtown Seattle at rush hours will delay returning to the UW significantly.

Taking I-5 South and the Tacoma Narrows Bridge (no ferry required)

This route is 79 driving miles from the UW to the station; one-way it takes approximately 2 hours with reasonable traffic, less if traffic is light. Avoid using this route at rush hours as there can be considerable bottlenecks between Seattle and Tacoma and on the Tacoma Narrows bridge. The advantage is it does not require a ferry transit.

From the UW, take 45th Street westbound from campus (.6 miles) and turn left onto I-5 Southbound. Continue south for 36.4 miles to the WA-16 West/So. 38 St. Exit. Keep right at the fork in the ramp and merge onto SR-16 West. Stay on SR-16 for 26.7 miles and it will become SR-3 North. Continue on SR-3 North for 8.7 miles and take the Newberry Hill Road Exit (this is the Seabeck exit). Turn left onto NW Newberry Hill Road and drive 3.1 miles to the intersection with Seabeck Highway NW (there is a Chevron gas station at the intersection).
